Iredell Health System will hold a six month heart series for women the third Thursday of every month beginning in February, national heart month.
Sisters at Heart will incorporate the many facets that affect a woman's heart health, including physical, emotional and spirit well being. Each session will feature a number of area professionals who will not only educate, but provide a monthly evening of fun and laughter.
"The physical heart is affected by so much more than nutrition and exercise, although they play a huge role," said Susan Hamilton, RN, Vice President of Nursing and Patient Care at Iredell Memorial Hospital. "Managing stress, growing and nurturing relationships, discovering joy in everyday life, embracing your sexual and spiritual sides all affect the wonderful workings of the heart."
Hamilton also explained that women's heart health is different than men's. "Our goal is to empower women to understand these differences and use this information to improve their heart care."
There is now abundant scientific evidence that, in addition to pumping blood, the heart directs and aligns many systems in the body so that they can function in harmony with one another. The heart is the most dominant in sending information to the brain, so it's key to reducing stress, boosting health and improving performance in all aspects of life.
"Women have a tendency of putting off their own health care needs because they are so busy taking care of everyone else, said Kelley Daspit, APR, director of Planning and Community Relations for Iredell Health System. "We know that women are busy, however we have designed this series with that in mind. A couple of hours a month will enable women and their girl friends to have fun and learn something important about their heart health while spending time together."
Daspit went on to explain that feeling connected through strong relationships is one of the positive things we as women can do for our hearts. "We want women to bring their sisters, their mothers, their daughters and their friends to spend time together while doing something good for themselves."
Sessions will be held on February 18, March 18, April 15, May 21, June 17 and July 16 at Little Joe's Chapel and Enrichment Center in Troutman. Participants will receive binders to hold the information they will receive each week, dinner, items from sponsors, and more. Those participants who commit to and are able to make it to all six sessions will be rewarded with a $10 gift card.
